Rupert-Henry School Therapy Dog
We're thrilled to announce that Rupert, our young therapy dog, has officially moved in and is all set to start learning the ropes on Monday, 4th November! As a puppy, he still has a bit of growing up to do and will be attending therapy dog boot camp. For now, Rupert will be in school every day, but he'll be keeping his distance—so you’ll only catch a wave from the office door!
Rupert is super excited to dive into his new role and has decided to keep you updated with his very own feature: Rupert’s Report! Be sure to keep an eye out for all the comings and goings of Ballyhenry! You can find a link to Rupert's Report on Instagram on our Home Page.
You may have caught the ITV programme "Dogs with Jobs" in September, which featured Lexi and some of our lovely Ballyhenry family. Link to Lexi on ITVx Lexi has been a cherished four-legged visitor with us for more than two years, joining us for a few hours each week. His gentle and loving presence has made a meaningful impact on our pupils, and now, in consultation with the governors, we have decided to take the next step in our journey. We all love visiting Lexi (and Gary his human friend) and these visits will continue for a time. We will then wish them well as they go on to visit other schools. We know that we will see them often as we continue our training.
We are delighted to share that we will be fostering our very own labradoodle pup who will grow up alongside the children here at Ballyhenry PS! Our pup is still called Rupert, his name begins with "R," just like the names of his six sisters.
Our adorable little friend is being provided by Assistance Dogs Northern Ireland (ADNI), an organisation that supports many school dog therapy programmes throughout Northern Ireland. This pup will be fully insured and trained by ADNI in conjunction with school staff, with ongoing training and support integrated into our daily activities at the school. We are beyond excited about this journey and cannot wait for you to meet him!
Why Have a Therapy Dog?
Having a therapy dog in our school will create a secure environment, especially for children who find school a little challenging at times. This makes it easier for children to feel safe and secure, allowing them to engage more openly. Our previous experience with Lexi has demonstrated the positive influence that a dog can have, and we wish to extend this rewarding experience to more of our pupils.
What Are the Benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy?
Engaging with our therapy dog can offer numerous benefits, including:
- Improved motor skills: Interacting with the dog can enhance coordination and movement.
- Improved balance: Activities with the pup can encourage better physical stability.
- Increased focus and attention: The presence of a therapy dog can help children concentrate more effectively.
- Increased self-esteem and self-confidence: Building a bond with the dog can foster personal growth.
- Reduced anxiety, grief, and isolation: Therapy dogs can provide solace and companionship.
- Increased trust and empathy: Children learn to form caring connections through interactions with the pup.
- Greater self-control: Engaging with a therapy dog teaches patience and impulse regulation.
- Improved social skills: Children can enhance their communication skills and cooperation through shared experiences with the dog.
To ensure a smooth integration of our new furry friend, we are conducting a comprehensive risk assessment and implementing a Therapy Dog Policy. While Labradoodles are known for their hypoallergenic coats, we do understand that there may still be some reactions. If you have concerns about your child’s potential interaction with the dog, we encourage you to reach out so we can address these concerns together. This also relates to our school staff as well.
Our policy and risk assessment will include the following guidelines:
- We will complete all necessary training to ensure that the pup is supported effectively by ADNI, along with our dedicated staff.
- Only students and staff who wish to spend time with the therapy dog will do so. No one will be required to engage if they feel uncomfortable.
- The dog will always wear a working harness and lead when interacting with the Ballyhenry School Community. He will be a working dog while at school with plenty of appropriate breaks.
- Anyone who interacts with the dog will wash their hands thoroughly before returning to class.
- When not on duty, the dog will have a secure and designated resting area, such as the principal's office.
We understand that introducing any new programme takes time and should be approached thoughtfully. We will be taking this journey one step at a time and will keep you informed of our progress. As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am here to address any issues you may have. Exciting times lie ahead for Ballyhenry PS, and we couldn't be more eager to embark on this adventure together!
